Belém is just outside Lisbon, accessed by train (not metro - we learned this the hard way) or tour bus. Elbowing our way through hoards of Chinese and French tourists, we found ourselves at the foot of Vasco da Gama’s tomb at the Geronimos Monastery. Even though we studied Vasco da Gama as youngsters, it didn’t dawn upon us until we came to Portugal the huge economic implications his discovery of a route to India had for the country and sovereignty. If it weren’t for the Earthquake of 1755, who knows how many more people on this planet would be speaking Portuguese, not Spanish!

Our required trip to Pastéis de Belém was worth it, but it didn’t meet the hype! We shared our table with two other Americans, who agreed. But, hey we’re not complaining about our “daily vitamin.”
