Santorini ⛴ Athens, Greece

Freddo Cappuccino
The best on the island.

When a ferry arrives or departs from Santorini, the whole island starts moving in the same direction. The roads are packed with traffic, heading to the port. Though Santorini is a popular island to visit, the ferry schedule back to Athens is limited. So, you can’t miss the boat. We built in a healthy amount of time to get to the port, making sure to squeeze in one last visit to Erotokritos Bakery, the best bakery on the island. We had freddo cappuccino and donuts and picked up some spanakopita for the ferry ride.
The Highspeed 6 delivered us to Athens in about 5 hours. It was a comfortable ride, though we found ourselves confused when we could hear Donald Trump barking over the intercom. The TVs had the news on and it was apparent that the Greeks are equally concerned about “Brexit” and the upcoming US General Election. Oy vey.
Athens was HOT when we arrived. HOT: the taxi thermostat read 102 degrees. 😳 We checked into our hotel and cooled off with some AC before heading into city for dinner. Being in Athens for one last night was like having a second chance to visit our favorite restaurants and bars. Every place had that one thing we loved to eat or drink, so we decided to compose a dinner tour of sorts: moussaka at Epirus Tavern, impeccable cocktails at Noel Bar, lukumades filled with mastic cream at Lukumades, and saganaki with pastirma and sudjuk and pickled okra at Karamanlidika.
We knew what we were getting ourselves into - this farewell dinner tour of ours, so we managed to pace ourselves along the way. 🙌 But, the heat meant that we had to drink beer to cool off. This filled our bellies - not uncomfortably, but enough that we walked the 3 blocks to our hotel very slowly. Folks, this is how you say goodbye to a city - you eat your way out of it.
