Well, we were so impressed by the scenery and vibes at Isola Bella, we went back! The day was a little overcast, so nearby beaches with far less stunning scenery weren’t even considered. Though there were other beaches and lidos surrounding Isola Bella, we thought, “Why make it hard for ourselves” - 😆.
But today, after swimming and sunning, we crossed the sandbar to Isola Bella itself. The island has a fascinating history, of being gifted by King Ferdinand I of Two Sicilies to the city of Taormina, then bought by an Englishwoman who built a house on it in the late 19th century. Today, there is a small museum that occupies the house, with an honorable, but mediocre museum of bird taxidermy. The building itself was carved into the rocky island, decorated with large windows and grottoes. It took us all of 15 minutes to tour the entire island and then we peaced to Taormina for drinks.
We went to Daiquiri Bar, a cocktail bar that has seating on a flight of steps in the town square. The steps were decorated with iconic, but fashionably updated “Moors Head Vases”. And the cocktail menu featured appropriately fruity versions of cocktails we’ve had on the island already. White Negroni? Yes, please. The bar was right across from the main fountain and church and on this particular day, the people watching was very ripe: we saw one wedding and three wedding photo shoots during the span of about 2 hours. There was also a wedding drone, that whizzed in and out of the crowd, capturing this fabulously sexy bride and her dapper groom.
Dinner was just down the way at Ristorande del Corso Umberto, which we decided upon because it had red and white checkered tablecloths - just like the movies. By then, we were all on our way to Schwastyville, so heaping piles of pasta was exactly what the doctor ordered. After dinner, we walked around the city before heading back to the hotel.
