Our original reason to travel to Sicily was on the suggestion of Jody, a friend of Kaoline’s and fellow IDEO-er. For some days, we were on separate parts of the island and finally decided to meet up! We drove from the northeast side of Sicily all the way to its southern-most point at Pachino.

This is a sleepy little town that probably sees a bit of action when the weather cooks up. It has a shallow beach and a few hotels, here and there. What the town is most famous for is its tomatoes. We drove past covered hoophouses full of tomato vines and later saw them sold fresh and dried at all of the produce stores in the town. They are really flavorful little things.

When we arrived, we were greeted by Jody and Tessa, who found a nice Airbnb with plenty of room for all 5 of us. We gathered our things and went to the beach for a bit of swimming and sunning. And then, went to the neighboring cafe to have crema di caffè - a sweet dessert of an espresso. Later, we had a cremolata from Dolci D’autore Luccarello, a little truck parked on the beach that was a family business since 1975. Not entirely sure what real the difference is between granita and cremolata, but it’s tasty all the same. 🍧

Kaoline sleuthed an awesome spot for dinner, at U Saracenu. The only person who knew more than a few words of English was the chef himself, who came out and explained the entire menu to us. We feasted on fresh tuna, calamari, and clams - a wonderful last dinner on Sicily. 👌
