So, the main goal of today was to get to Palermo, since everyone’s outbound flights were there. This meant taking a long drive from the southernmost tip of Sicily to the northernmost area of the island. The only way to do this is to go through it! Kaoline helped us decide on taking a lunchbreak in Enna, a city located in the middle of the island. With not much else than a map and a TripAdvisor list, we decided on going to Paccamora Bio Bar. We caravaned along the highway - only getting separated once and met in Enna.
Enna is a curious city, built atop a hill in the center of Sicily. We drove up a windy road for a few kilometers with no view of the city and then suddenly found ourselves in a bustling downtown area, flanked by Medieval churches all surrounded by a fortress wall. According to Wikipedia, Enna is nicknamed the “ombelico - or navel, of Sicily.” Coooool.
We knew there was so much more to see and do in Enna, but we had to move on! After a nice lunch of green-inspired pasta (nearly everyone ordered the vegetarian, spelt, “green” lasagna), we hopped back into the car and powered through to Palermo. Everyone’s flights had been delayed, which was a huge bummer. After a long day of driving, the last thing anyone really wanted was a 3-4 hour delay back home to London. We decided to make gelato out of lemons and stopped at a busy, busy beachtown before heading to the airport. Gelato = ✌️. We said our goodbyes to Kaoline, who has been such a fabulous vacationmate this past week. And, we’re excited to see her again, when we are in London in about a month! We are so spoiled to have friends in Europe!
So, we made it to Rome. And hustled our way to our Airbnb, which was located in Trastevere. Our taxi cab driver was not 100% sure where he was going (we know this because he pulled out the Rome A-Z map book on the sly) and even rejected our Google Map we pulled up on our phone. Well, son took us to the wrong place. And then proceeded to give us a hard time about how we said the wrong “Piazza di Santa Apollonia.” Oy vey - really the last thing we wanted to deal with today. Well, he hastily dropped us off close by the Airbnb, since most of the surrounding streets were closed to cars. We weaved through hoards of tourists with our luggage and well, let’s say we weren’t the happiest people.
But, getting into the Airbnb was easier than we had anticipated. And Claudio, our Airbnb host’s teenage son set us up well. He showed us the essentials: WiFi, AC. He even made a suggestion for dinner and drinks in the area - adorable. He told us to go to Da Augusto, which he assured us was not “touristic.” We went, and well, the line was long and cash only and we were turned away since it was so close to closing. 😫 We want pasta! We want wine! Wah!
It’s not hard to get pasta and wine in Rome. We just hopped into the first restaurant we saw around the corner, which was perfectly pasta-y and saucy: Ditta Trinchetti. When in Rome (finally)!
